About Dr SSM

I am Dr Saima Salim Mughal. I graduated with my MBBS from Royal London and Saint Bartholomew's School of Medicine and Dentistry, in London in 1998. From there onwards I started my journey to becoming a Primary Care General Practitioner. I completed my General Practice training in 2002. Despite reaching this position, my learning never stopped. I completed other post graduate training such as Membership of the Royal College of General Practitioners, Diploma of Family Planning and also Diploma of Child Health. Over the years, I developed an interest in Women's health, Rheumatology, Dermatology and Paediatrics and nutrition which helped me improve my clinical practice. Unfortunately some health hurdles lead me to taking time away from my clinical practice but I carried on with my academic interests. In the last 15 plus years, I developed a more in depth interest in how health is associated with nutrition. I even did a 6 months accredited training with Monash University in Australia. That also became my speical subject of interest. It lead me on to study other subjects in nutrition. I started writing recipes such as low FODMAP recipes or recipes for renal patients. My own health hurdles also lead me to study nutrition in more depth. I wanted to find holistic ways to cure my own health problems. I started researching and came across the Microbiome and started looking at countless studies on this subject. I was so fascinated that I wrote up a project on this and decided to pursue this as my interest. This is how my new journey to study nutrition, microbiome, health and disease began.

When I was doing clinical practice, one of the reasons why I was able to empathise with my patients was that I suffered with many medical conditions myself. Some of these impacted my life to a large extent. Everything revolved around my health and often I needed to take time out of work. However, my time away from clinical practice only brought me closer to academic research. In my spare time, I started to review clinical evidence of many poorly understood conditions. That is when I came across Microbiome leading me to do a research project called "The role of Microbiome in Medicine". The project started off a chain reaction where I started learning other poorly understood aspects of Nutrition and Health such as the Low FODMAP diet, food allergies and other weight losing diets on the market. I was intrigued by what I learned and I decided to share my findings on this platform by creating my own website. My website is simply an opportunity for us to all connect and share my opinions based on the clinical evidence that I have come across. This is not medical advice neither does it aim to replace advice given by your own doctors. If you wish to explore any of these ideas, please discuss with your own doctor first. I hope you enjoy reading my content. Please also follow me on instagram for videos and posts on this subject.
